NCAA Division I roundup
Five Hearts place at Wilkes Open
WILKES-BARRE, Pa., Dec. 30 -- Five Sacred Heart wrestlers placed at the 82nd annual Wilkes Open, held on the campus of Wilkes University.

In his debut as a Pioneer, Patrick Skinner placed third at 125 pounds. He opened the day with a 5-1 victory over Josh Patrick of Rutgers and a 20-1 technical fall of Wilkes' Dustin Zuzulock. After a loss to North Carolina's Tyrone Klump, Skinner reached the third place match which he won 6-5 over Zack Valcarce of Rider. In all, Skinner was 6-1 in the tournament.

Casey Mitchell of South Windsor (157) continued his strong sophomore season with a third place finish. Mitchell pinned his first two opponents before losing to Bloomsburg's Josh Ortman in the quarterfinals. He responded to the loss with a pin and two more wins to take third with a 2-0 win against NYU's Raymond Jazzikoff, capping off a 5-1 tournament.

Conan Schuster (174) won four straight consolation round bouts to finish third. In the wrestlebacks, Schuster pinned his next two opponents before avenging an earlier loss to Mike Fagg-Daves of Rider with a 6-4 win to advance to the third place match. Schuster pinned Buffalo's Jake Weber less than a minute into the match to take third. Both Johnny Vrasidas (165) and Elliott Antler (184) were 3-2 and finished fifth.

"Our guys fought so hard in the wrestlebacks, which speaks volumes to their character and pride," said head coach Andy Lausier. "Some competitive breakthroughs took place today and we'll look to capitalize on these moments and make progress each week". No team scoring was held at the event.

In Williamstown, Mass., Newington’s Chris Chorzepa and Hand’s Jake Savoca won individual matches at Williams beat Plymouth State, 36-12 in the home opener for the Ephs, now 2-0. Chorzepa trailed for most of the match, battling back and posting a pin with 10 seconds remaining over Chris Perreault in 6:50.

"At 184 the Plymouth kid is tough and sometimes if you are not wrestling your best match it really takes a lot of heart to pull it out,” Williams coach Scott Honecker said. “I'm really pleased that when things were not going Chris's way he mapped out a way to victory."

Savoca, a freshman, won by technical fall at 149 pounds over Alex Gerhold. "Jake Savoca has a huge tool box of skills and he's competing at as high a level as we could expect out of a freshman," Honecker said.
