Carrillo is named wrestler of the year
SOUTHINGTON, March 18 – Middletown High senior Devon Carrillo was named as the wrestler of the year in balloting by the sate wrestling coaches at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s annual All-State banquet Sunday at the Aqua Turf.

Xavier, which won it second straight Class LL championship and captured its first State Open title, was recognized as the state’s team of the year.

Griswold’s Brandon Walsh was recognized as Scholar Athlete of the year with a $500 scholarship from the ABMA Foundation in Meriden, an organization that recognizes the heroic effort of the late Alberta Baumgart to fight breast cancer. Walsh was one of three athletes at this year's banquet to have earned Academic All-State honors for four years. The others were Xavier's Tyler Cunningham and Brookfield's Jack McKeever.

Wrestlers that won State Open, Class LL, Class L, Class M and Class S championships were honored along with over 140 wrestlers earning Academic All-State honors for finishing in the top six of their respective weight class and having an average over 85.

Carrillo (41-0) finished undefeated at 182 pounds and won his third straight Class L title, a second straight State Open championship and his first New England title.
