College roundup
Chorzepa is NEWA wrestler of the week
Connecticut Wrestling Online
Chris Chorzepa, the Newington junior at Williams College, was named the wrestler of the week by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA).

Chorzepa, who competes a 184 pounds, went 3-0 last Saturday at the METRO/NEWA Duals hosted by Roger Williams. Chorzepa pinned Maksimilian Garkusha of Hunter in 32 seconds. Next, Chorzepa won by major decision over Dan Wojtaszek of the College of New Jersey, who is No. 13 in the country, 11-3. In his third win, Chorzepa pinned Joseph Ragsdale of Centenary in 2:39.

Chorzepa is now 30-0 with 16 pins and his career record stands at 90-7. The two-time All American is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region and No.2 in the country. Chorzepa has led all three NCAA divisions in total number of pins through the first two sets of rankings released by the NCAA.

As a freshman, Chorzepa's participation was limited due to injury, but he still amassed a record of 18-4 and earned All-America honors finishing third. He became just the second Eph first year to earn All-America honors.

As a sophomore Chorzepa became only the second Eph to earn All-America honors his first two years, joining current senior captain Jorge Lopez (157). Chorzepa is striving to become the fifth Eph to earn All-America honors three times. Lopez is the lone Eph wrestler to earn All-America honors first year through junior year at Williams and this winter Lopez is striving to become the first Eph to earn All-America honors all four years.

Chorzepa's current 30-match win streak is his longest in-season streak, eclipsing last winter's 24-match streak.

"Chris has the complete wrestler's mindset," noted Eph head coach Scott Honecker. "He's focused on domination, but always striving to get better. Chris will have another tough one this weekend against Ithaca and it will be a good opportunity for him to show his growth. As a two-time All-American, he rightfully has some lofty goals. He needs to continue packing a lunch every day and working tirelessly to achieve them.

Chorzepa and his Eph teammates will make their final 2016 appearance at home this Saturday when the Ephs host Oneonta State, Wesleyan, and Ithaca with matches being held on two mats simultaneously. The first round of matches will begin at noon.

Record win for N.C. State
No. 3 North Carolina State earned a record 20th win Sunday with a 24-9 win over West Virginia in Morgantown in ACC action. After dropping the first match at 125, the Pack (20-0, 4-0 ACC) won five straight matches to take control.

Part of that run was the 11th straight win from No. 3 Kevin Jack (141), who earned a 9-0 decision. He had three takedowns in the victory over Tony DeAngelo.

McKeever gets 10th win
Brookfield senior Jack McKeever (174) had a 12-4 win Sunday over Sacred Heart’s Johnny Vrasidas as Binghamton hammered the Pioneers, 38-4. McKeever had two takedowns in the first minutes of the match to establish control. McKeever is 10-3 on the year with two pins. Binghamton improved to 9-5 and 5-3 in EIWA.

Pioneers drop a pair
Gerard Daly (125) earned the lone win for Sacred Heart (1-11, 0-7 EIWA) with a 14-4 win over Steven Bulzomi. Sacred Heart nearly rallied from a 16-point deficit but still fell to George Mason in Fairfield on Saturday, Jan. 30, in a 26-16 defeat. Former Xavier wrestler Elliott Antler (184) earned a 11-5 victory in the match.

Kilpatrick 2nd in MAC
Kings College’s Howard Kilpatrick, a sophomore from Colchester, finished second at 157 pounds at the recent Middle Atlantic Conference championship meet. King’s finished with five wrestlers placing in the top six of their weight classes. Kilpatrick won his first match with a 6-5 decision over Sekou Harris of Delaware Valley. In the semifinals he faced Nick Racanelli of Wilkes and posted a 3-2 decision. In the finals he dropped a 8-0 decision to top-seeded Larry Cannon of Messiah, the eighth ranked wrestler nationally at 157.

Anderson dropping wrestling
In Anderson, South Carolina, Anderson University has announced that the school will be dropping its varsity wrestling program at the end of the season.

All student-athletes currently receiving wrestling scholarships will have those scholarships honored for the remainder of their undergraduate careers at AU, provided they make satisfactory academic progress as mandated for all student-athletes by the school. Should student-athletes seek to continue their wrestling careers at other institutions, they will be eligible immediately under NCAA guidelines and the University will provide assistance in the transfer process.

Three Connecticut wrestlers are with the Division II program. South Windsor sophomore Connor Caffrey (141) and freshmen Kyle Lindner (New Milford, 125) and Dan Ebert (Fairfield Warde, 157) are on the squad. Caffrey is 1-2 this year, Lindert is 2-1 and Eberg is 4-2.

Battle of Providence
Once again, Rhode Island College and Johnson & Wales competed before nearly 1,500 fans in the annual city of Providence rivalry match. The two schools have done an amazing job creating a great atmosphere to watch wrestling. Just like last week at the NEWA Duals, both teams won five matches but it was Johnson & Wales (14-6) with bonus points through pins and major decisions to earn a 23-16 victory. Johnson & Wales has wrestled nine of the top 20 Division III teams in the country and including six in the top 10.

Bobby Jordan, last year’s Northeast Regional finalist won by tech fall getting the Wildcats out to a 5-0 lead.  RIC’s Stephen Masi won by decision 4-1 over Cody Beaudette and the region’s No. 1 ranked wrestler, Shawn Giblin of RIC, beat Justin Colon 14-2 to put the Anchormen up 7-5.  Giblin has looked dominating back down at 141 and looks to make a deep run into March. Gaccione and Grippi won back to back decisions for the Wildcats at 149 and 157, before Ricondo Cole won a decision for RIC to make the score 11-10 JWU.  At 174, Stephen Jarrell pinned Vincent Drago in 1:44 to put JWU up 17-10.  RIC would win two of the last three matches with Lake and Georges winning close decisions but it would not be enough.

Johnson & Wales hosted the USC Wildcat Open the next day. Several Wildcats came home with individual titles including Bobby Jordan (125), Stephen Jarrell (174) and Windsor Locks’ Khamri Thomas (197). Justin Colon (141) finished second while Joe Ferinde (133), Thomas Grippi (157) Ryan Schaal (174) and Dae’Sean Brown (184) each finished third JWU.

Around New England
Western New England University and Trinity College sent their varsity teams to the Wildcat Open. WNEU was led by Tim Mclinden who was second at 125 and Austin Sisco who was fifth at 133.  Trinity was led by Andrew Saccone, who was fifth at 125 and Mike Lofrese who was fourth at 141. The tournament has continued to grow and had some strong wrestlers from Harvard, Brown, Long Island Post, and many unattached wrestlers.

Roger Williams’ Frankie Colom competed at the Wildcat Open and was fourth at 165. He earned his 100th career win in the tournament. Colom has had an outstanding career but seems to be battling numerous injuries as this was his first time back on the mat in about a month.

Wesleyan beat Springfield in a dual meet Saturday night in Middletown, 36-8. Springfield won two of the first four matches with Tyler Keane (Glastonbury) at 133 beating Crippen 4-1 and Joseph winning by tech fall over Armendarez but Wesleyan would win the last six matches of the dual.  Wesleyan got three good wins from three freshmen on the night -- Zach Murillo (Southington) at 125 beat Joel Zambrano, 7-4, James Mattias at 141 beat David Colvin (Old Saybrook), 8-6, and Roy Forys at 165 beat Ryan Harty, 11-8.  Taran Carr and Chris Siracusa continue their strong seasons with Carr getting a pin in 3:33 and Siracusa winning by major decision 12-0.

The Cardinals have a new 285 in junior Devon Carillo (Middletown High). Carrillo a football player at Wesleyan is wrestling for the first time since high school and has looked strong after his first month back on the mat. Carrillo was up 10-1 on Irakli Kakauridze of Springfield when he pinned him in 1:27.

Springfield then hosted No. 10 ranked College of New Jersey the next day and lost, 28-15. The Pride were led by Tyler Keane (Glastonbury) and Joseph again who both beat good wrestlers by decision.  Springfield also got wins from Gutierrez at 157 who won by decision and Kakauridze who won at 285.

Roger Williams University, Bridgewater State University, and Williams competed in the Metro Duals against Hunter, TCNJ, and Centenary at Roger Williams on Saturday.

It was another great weekend for Roger Williams with another three wins to improve to 21-1. The 21 wins is a new single season school record for Roger Williams. David Welch went 3-0 to become the team’s all-time leader in individual wins with the 140th win of his career. He is currently ranked No. 1 in Division III at 197 pounds.

RWU beat Centenary 36-7 and the dual was highlighted by Danny Ressler (174), who beat Josh Sibbles, 5-2.  Sibbles was ranked No. 2 in the country.  RWU then beat Hunter 47-0 and freshmen Jean Luc-Lemieux beat returning national qualifier Jadon Rice, 8-4.  Against TCNJ, each team won five matches apiece and RWU won on criteria, 16-15.  The Hawks dropped two decisions in overtime and the three matches they lost in regulation were all decided by a point.

Williams (10-3) went 2-1 beating Centenary and Hunter but fell to TCNJ. Williams was led by Matt Morris at 125, Jake Savoca at 149, Jorge Lopez at 157, and Chris Chorzepa at 184 whom all went 4-0 on the day.

Bridgewater State went 1-2 at the Metro Duals beating Hunter 24-21.  Tom Arseneault led the way for the Bears going 3-0 at 285.  Arseneault beat Steve Boncimino of TCNJ 3-2.

WPI, Plymouth State University, the University of Southern Maine, and Brockport competed in a four-team hosted by WPI.  WPI went 2-1 beating PSU and USM.  Brian Amato (Newington) led the way for WPI going 3-0 on the day.  The returning All American beat Asher Kramer of Brockport who was ranked No. 9 nationally.  Justin Marsh had a good win over Clay Callahan of Plymouth State, 11-4 and WPI’s Lucas Muntz (West Hartford) beat Matt Froio of PSU 6-2.

Southern Maine and Plymouth State both went 0-2 losing to WPI and Brockport.  USM was led by CJ Luth (Milford) and Daniel Del Gallo who both went 2-0.  Del Gallo beat Jordan Dyer of Brockport a returning national Qualifier 6-4.  Luth won by decision over Brabon of Brockport and won by major Decision over Deluca of WPI.   Bruce Mclee of PSU beat Joe Pizzuto of WPI by Major decision 11-3 to lead the Panthers.

Norwich University and the Coast Guard competed at the All Academy championships in Lexington, Virginia.  No Division 3 wrestlers placed in the top four of the very competitive tournament. Coast Guard’s Chris Sullivan (157) made the semifinals but dropped his next two matches by decision. Sullivan is 21-6 on the year.
