Sacred Heart snaps 12-match losing streak
BLOOMSBURG, PA, Feb. 13 – Sacred Heart won seven of 10 matches to snap a 12-match losing streak with a 24-10 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday. The Pioneers (2-12) started off the day with freshman Gerard Daly (133) winning by pin in 2:28. Sacred Heart extended its lead with victories by Alex Harbsberger (141) and Brandon Levesque (149).

After South Windsor’s Casey Mitchell (154) dropped a 3-0 decision, Matt Fisher (165) earned a two-point win, Johnny Vrasida (174) won by four and Xavier’s Elliot Antler (184) earned a 8-2 win over Kyle Wojtaskzek. Duke Sherwood (285) finished off the day with a win for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart returns to the mat February 20 at Franklin and Marshall.

Coast Guard tops Merchant Marine
KINGS POINT, N.Y., Feb. 10 -- Matt McAllister's sudden victory in overtime at 141 pounds proved to be a key win for Coast Guard as the Bears won six of the nine matches to beat archrival Merchant Marine 19-18. The Bears improve to 6-5 in dual meets and beat the Mariners in back-to-back seasons for the first time in nine years.

NCAA Div. 3 Northeast Regional is this weekend in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD – Wrestlers at Division III schools in New England will make their bid to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III national championship tournament this weekend at the Northeast Regional on Saturday and Sunday at Springfield College.

Itacha College won the Northeast Region title a year ago with Johnson & Wales taking second and Williams finishing third.

Four wrestlers with Connecticut ties finished among the top three in their weight classes and earned a trip to the national tournament -- Newington’s Chris Chorzepa of Williams College, who was third at 184 pounds, Madison’s Jake Savoca of Williams, who took third at 141 pounds, Newington’s Brian Amato of WPI, who was third at 125 and Somers' Kyle Foster of Roger Williams, who was third at 285 pounds.

Chorzepa, Foster and Amato did earn All-American honors last winter. Chorzepa is currently ranked No. 2 in Division III at 184 pounds while Foster is ranked No. 5 at 285.

Five top 25 teams will be in the Northeast Regional including No. 3 Roger Williams, No. 6 Cortland State, No. 9 Itacha, No. 12 Johnson & Wales and No. 16 Williams. Trinity College, Wesleyan and Coast Guard will also be participating in the tournament.

Danbury sophomore Kevin Jack (141) won by tech fall to help the No. 3 North Carolina State wrestling team beat No. 2 Iowa, 21-17 on the road Monday night in the NWCA National Duals championship series. Jack had five takedowns, two nears falls and a reversal to earn his 15th straight win and improve to 21-3.The Wolfpack finish the season with a 23-1 record and with victories at No. 2 Iowa, No. 4 Oklahoma State and at home against No. 5 Missouri.

Roger Williams won its fourth straight Pilgrim League championship with a 16-15 win over Johnson and Wales on criteria, total points (39-38). The Hawks finish the season 23-3 while Johnson and Wales finishes at 17-7.

Johnson & Wales won the first two matches to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Fourth-ranked Bobby Jordan needed the extra point from riding time to defeat Nick Barbaria (Scarsdale, N.Y.) 4-3, at 125 pounds. A third-period takedown and riding time point gave Joe Ferinde the 3-0 win at 133 pounds against Jean-Luc Lemieux.

Roger Williams got on the board when Justin Cochran beat Justin Colon (Belleville, NJ), 6-3, at 141 pounds. In the next bout, Danny Downes (Houston, TX) was defeated by  Joey Gaccione , 3-0, because of a third-period escape and riding time.

Freshman Thomas Grippi (Bedford Hills, NY) staked the Wildcats to a 12-3 lead when he beat Jason Bowen, 11-4 at 157 pounds. Grippi nearly had a major decision but Bowen fought back and got four points late in the third period. The Hawks continued  by winning back-to-back matches to pull within 12-9.

Johnson & Wales picked up a victory at 184 pounds as Dae'Sean Brown (Neptune, NJ) got a pair of takedowns in the second period on his way to a 4-3 victory over Joe Albina. Roger Williams narrowed the lead to three when top-ranked David Welch (Salem, N.H.) beat Khamri Thomas (Windsor Locks) 3-2, at 197 pounds. At 285 pounds, Kyle Foster (Somers) had a 2-1 decision over Jonah Aurelio.

Sacred Heart lost its dual meet finale with a hard fought 19-17 loss to Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster on Feb. 20. The Pioneers finish the season with a 2-13 record. Xavier’s Elliott Antler picked up a win for Sacred Heart at 184 pounds. The Pioneers hit the mat next on March 4-5 when they compete at the EIWA championships at Princeton.
