New England teams preparing for upcoming Northeast Regional
New England Wrestling Association
NEWA Wrestler of Week: Silas Murray (Brentwood, NY), senior, Rhode Island College, 133 pounds
Silas Murray has been the top ranked wrestler since the beginning of the season at 133 and finished the regular season undefeated. He helped RIC to three dual meet wins this weekend as he went 3-0. Against Coast Guard, he beat All American Nate Giorgio 9-2. The Anchormen finished the season 16-4 and tied for No. 2 in New England.
NEWA Rookie Wrestler of Week: Martin Strenk (Delaware Valley PA), freshman, Williams College, 174 pounds
Martin Strenk won the Rookie of the week for the second time this season. Strenk had two pins for the Ephs over the weekend to help lead them to dual meet victories over Springfield and AIC. His pin over Vincent Silano of Springfield in 6:56 helped the Ephs beat the Pride 22-19 even though they only won 4 of the 10 matches. He also had a pin over Mike Schultz of AIC in 6:44..

DIVISION III NORTHEAST REGIONALS on MARCH 1-2 at WESLEYAN: Wesleyan will be hosting the 2nd annual NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals on Sat.-Sun., March 1-2 at its Middletown campus. The top three finisheres in each weight class will go on to represent the region in the NCAA Division III Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Fri.-Sat., March 14-15.
The six-site regional format is part of a new qualification process for the Division III Wrestling Championships, approved by the Division III Championships Committee in April 2012. The format says that the top-three wrestlers from each weight class will advance to the championships from each of the six regional sites, allowing for a total of 180 qualifiers.
The previous Division III wrestling qualification system consisted of seven automatic-qualifying conferences and two NCAA sponsored regionals that moved 170 student-athletes onto the championships through automatic bids and at-large selections.

AROUND THE MAT: Williams went 2-0 on the weekend beating Springfield, 22-19 and AIC, 26-15. Against Springfield they got a forfeit at 125 and had two pins by Jorge Lopez at 157 and Strenk at 174. A major decision by Chris Chorzepa would give the Ephs 22 points and despite only winning 4 of the 10 matches, they held on for the dual victory. Lopez and Strenk both had two pins and Chorzepa also had two wins on the day with a win by pin and major decision. Springfield had 5 starters out of the lineup and hope to be at full strength for the regionals. At 149 Eric Hamrick beat Tim Garipolli 1-0 and Hunter Ayen at 197 beat Anthony Brooks 8-2. On Wednesday the Pride beat WPI 23-13 and won 7 of the 10 varsity bouts. Devin Biscaha bumped up to 165 and beat Torin Zonfrelli 6-0 and Tyler Keane got a hard fought win 5-2 over Brian Jennings at 133.
On the weekend, WPI beat Western New England, 45-6 but lost to Brockport, 24-16. Tyler Tilbe at 141, Torin Zonfrelli at 165, and Justin Marsh at 174 all went 2-0 for the Engineers. WPI finished the season 12-11 and it is the most dual meet victories in a season in over a decade.
Roger Williams University won two matches over the weekend and are now 18-1. The Hawks are having a great season and still have one more big dual meet this Friday against Johnson & Wales. The Hawks beat Western New England, 44-9 and Brockport, 24-14. Kyle Foster continues to get better and won 3-2 over Cole Tristram and Ty Herzog was back in the lineup at 157 and won 10-9 against Lewis Cuccichiara. Crowell at 165 and Welch at 184 both had big first period pins to help RWU beat Brockport.
RIC went 3-0 over the weekend with wins over Coast Guard, 22-16, Bridgewater State, 37-9, and Trinity, 42-9. The Anchormen big three at the top of their lineup, Jon Murray, Silas Murray, and Ricondo Cole all went 3-0 and all have big goals going into the regionals the next two weeks. The Anchormen had another great season going 16-4. They were however without standout 285 Brian Nicoll who is hopefully just getting 100 percent healthy for the regionals.
Trinity got the best of Bridgewater State in a dual meet, 34-9. Trinity got another 3-0 day from Petros Hologitas (197), including a 9-4 win over a tough John Georges of RIC, 9-4. Ricky Caruso went 2-0 and beat Kyle McGuire (285) of Trinity 2-1. The 285-weight class should be a lot of fun to watch at the regionals with a lot of the talent in the weight…Coast Guard went 1-1 over the weekend with a loss to RIC but a win against Trinity. Luke Taylor went 2-0 and had a 5-1 win over Kyle Lundberg of Trinity at 174. Matt Vierra at 149 and Mike Palumbo at 157 also went 2-0 with two good wins each.
Johnson & Wales and Wesleyan competed in a quad meet with Hunter and Oswego in Middletown. The Wildcats beat Wesleyan, 30-15. In what was hoping to be a big showdown at 174 saw Ryan Sblendorio win by injury default over Colin Lenhardt after going up 2-0 in the first period. Let’s hope it is just precautionary and Lenhardt is back in two weeks to defend his region title. Steve Jarrell had a big 4-3 win over Taran Carr and went 3-0 on the day for JWU. Gideon Yim at 141, Everet Desilets at 157, and Dylen Seybolt at 184 all went 2-0 and George Madosky was 3-0 for JWU on the weekend. Wesleyan went 2-1 beating Oswego and Hunter after falling to JWU. Ryan Sblendorio was 2-0 at 174 for the Cardinals. James Hamilton at 133, Chris Siracusa at 149, Taran Carr at 165, Josh Roometua at 197, and Thor Lichtenstein at 285 all went 2-1 for the Cardinals.
Southern Maine, Norwich and Plymouth State competed at the North Atlantic Invitational over the weekend. Khalil Newbill at 125, Dan Del Gallo at 149, Caleb Hall at 157, Sean Fagan at 197, and Dan Suarez at 235 all won titles for the Huskies. Will Burns (174) and Anthony Joyce (285) won titles for the Cadets. Plymouth State had two champions in Clay Callahan (165) and Chris Perreault (184).
