Cortland State wins Northeast Regional
MIDDLETOWN, March 2 -- Cortland State won its second consecutive NCAA Division III Northeast Regional championship and six Red Dragons qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships -- five as regional champions at Wesleyan.
Cortland finished first in the 18-team field with 128 points, two ahead of runner-up Ithaca. Johnson & Wales (R.I.) placed third with 105.5 points and Roger Williams was fourth with 97.5 points. Ranked ninth nationally in Div. III, Cortland will be sending six wrestlers to nationals for the second year in a row. The championship meet is March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Earning trips to nationals for Cortland with regional titles were senior Sean Kempf (215); senior Brian Bistis (141); sophomore Bobby Dierna (149); junior Lou Puca (174); and sophomore Joe Giaramita (197).
The top three finishers in each weight class at regionals qualified for the NCAA championship meet on March 14th in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
CADET EARNS THIRD TRIP TO NCAA: Coast Guard junior All-American Nate Giorgio is heading back to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship after earning an automatic berth with his third place finish.
Giorgio (133 pounds) will be making his third straight trip to the NCAA championship. He placed fourth nationally at 125 pounds to earn All-America honors as a freshman before winning one of three matches last season at the NCAA's.
Giorgio advanced on a medical forfeit before recording a 14-2 major decision to earn a spot in the semifinals.He lost a tough 7-6 decision to the No. 2 seed Silas Murray, ranked ninth nationally, from Rhode Island College before registering an 11-1 major decision over Brian Jennings from WPI to earn a spot in the third place match. Giorgio finished third with a convincing 4-0 win over Patrick Lacroix from Roger Williams.
TWO BANTAMS QUALIFY: Trinity College junior heavyweight Kyle McGuire (Mansfield, Mass.) went 4-0, including a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Lance Moore, of Cortland State, to win his weight class title in the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional.
Bantam senior tri-captain Petros Hologitas (Brockton, Mass.) reached the finals of the 197-pound bracket, before falling to Cortland State's Joe Giaramita, ranked No. 3 nationally, in the finals by a score of 7-3. Both wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament. Trinity placed 11th in team standings with 39.5 points.
"Kyle McGuire, an unseeded wrestler, won the tournament without surrendering a single takedown," said Trinity head coach Marques Gales. "Having a pair of national qualifiers is a huge step forward for our program."
MAT DUST: A former Newington High wrestler qualified for the NCAA Division III national tournament. Williams freshman Christopher Chorzepa qualified by beating Springfield’s Michael Case, 5-0 in the consolation final at 184 pounds. … Chorzepa’s former teammate Brian Amato nearly qualified. Wrestling for WPI, Amato dropped a 5-4 decision to Jonathan Murray of Rhode Island College in the consolation final at 126 pounds. ... Wesleyan had nine wrestlers in the tournament and eight won at least one match but none finished in the top six of their respective weight classes.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, March 15 -- The Trinity College wrestling team sent two representatives to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the first time since 2001, and Bantam Head Coach Marques Gales was honored for his outstanding effort in his first year at the helm for Trinity as one of three to share the 2014 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Rookie Coach of the Year honors.
Gales was hired as Trinity's head coach in late summer, inheriting a small roster that yielded 12 or more points to Bantam opponents due to forfeits at two or more weight classes. Trinity wrestlers battled its opponents tough from the beginning of the year to the end, finishing with a 2-18 dual-match record but rallying to finish 11th in the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships at Wesleyan two weeks ago. He shares the NWCA National Rookie Coach of the Year Award with Nate Yetzer, of Ferrum, and Efrain Ayala, of Wisc.-Oshkosh.
